How to create anime water

This tutorial is going to explain how you can make simple water, like you see in cartoons or anime.

Create a document of, let's say, 1024 by 768, with a white background (so you can see better). You can add a gradient to immitate te sky, but I recommend a simple, white background.

Grab a brush and modify the settings like this: settings (the brush color I selected is #5575a0. Color a part of the image (less than half), making sure not to leave any white spaces, like this.

Change the color and opacity (lower it) of the brush now and continue drawing random lines on the water. Don't cover the whole previous part. Do this repeatedly, changing colors after you're pleased with the amount of color you have of each one. I have this result. The differences in color may not be so noticeable, they have to be discrete.

Next we have to make the highlights. Take the brush with these settings (the color is #cedcef). Make a new layer and draw some random lines on the water, like this. Go to the Motion Blur filter (Filters -> Blur -> Motion Blur...) and enter these settings: Angle -4, Distance 273 pixels (you can enter more or less, it depends on what you think is fit). Here's what I got: result.

Now we need to give the whole water image a feeling of "real" water. We need to erase the extra parts where the horizon line should be. Merge the layers together. Switch to the Eraser Tool and enter these settings: Opacity 100%, Master Diameter 178 px, Hardness 100%.

Lock the layer by clicking on the little square near the Lock: option in the layer panel (the first image). Position the brush in the corner of the water part, being careful not to cut off too much from the water. Hold down the Shift key and left-click and drag the brush horizontally. It's not necessary to keep a straight direction, since holding down the Shift key allows you to maintain a horizontal/vertical direction, depending on which direction you move the mouse in. Here's my final result.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and didn't find it too difficult/boring to follow ^^ Now you can create water, play around with filters and invent wonderful effects! It's mostly up to what you think looks good, I used settings I thought were fitting. If you think the water has colors that are too light, you can adjust it from Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast...
